15/07/2025 ‘Creating Beautiful Borders’ with Jack and Laura Willgoss

A Day with Jack and Laura Willgoss – Tuesday 15th July – 10.30am to 3.30pm

When we established Wildegoose in an old derelict walled garden, back in 2013, we had always planned to create a garden of equal importance to the nursery. Not just a series of glorified stock beds from which to propagate, but a carefully designed layout of different garden rooms, each with their own distinct feel and plant palette.  Twelve years on and after many years designing and maintaining borders, not only here at Wildegoose but for other projects both before and after taking on the Walled Garden, we feel we have honed a system to avoid the most obvious mistakes and guarantee the greatest successes when putting together a new border or reinvigorating an old one.

This study day will focus on the key elements to create a beautiful border not just in May – aka Chelsea Flower Show – but throughout the seasons. We will be looking at how to gain inspiration, the importance of balance versus contrast, succession planting, a look at colour, shape and form and a lot of recommendations on plant selection, use and how to combine them. The course will be run as a lecture with slides as well as getting out into the garden to demonstrate these principals with some very different styles of borders.

Course cost includes coffee and biscuits on arrival and a two course lunch.
