Bergenia emeiensis
Bergenia are a group of plants I have often overlooked, however a pot of Bergenia emiensis in the porch of Great Dixter one April lead me on a trail to track down this species. Bergenia emiensis flowers much earlier then most, mid March for us. The flowers are much more delicate then most and when they warm up in the sun they open wide. Quite beautiful.
I grow two different colour strains, a white strain and a pink strain. At present the plants for sale are grown from seed from our stock plants so and have not flowered yet so the colour is unknown.
I am also building up my stock of Bergenia ‘Pink Ice’ which is a cross between Bergenia emiensis and Bergenia cilliata (another superb species), hopefully available in 2026.
