Peucedanum verticillare

Peucedanum verticillare or the Giant Hog Fennel, has to be one of my desert island plants.  From the moment it emerges in the spring with its burgundy flushed foliage, to the towering purple hues stems topped with giant apple green cow parsley like flowers it is a shear delight.  Towering above my head at over 2meters tall it creates a statement in the border.  Leave the flower heads after flowering and you will be rewarded with some of the finest seed heads in the garden.

Peucedanum verticillare is monocarpic, meaning it dies after flowering, however it will produce ample seed and we now have a steady succession of plants coming to flowering size.

Simply superb.
