The Garden Jungle or Gardening to Save the Planet
By Dave Goulson
My journey into gardening came via my Grandmother, a keen gardener but more importantly a great lover of the natural world. She taught me to admire and respect even the smallest of creatures that we find in our garden. Upon embarking on my horticultural training I found that gardening was at a somewhat juxtaposition, on one hand we filled the garden with plants, flowers and habitats to attract an array of wildlife and on the other hand at the first sight of aphids, mildew or a glut of weeds we would reach to the chemical cabinet to find some noxious concoction to rid the garden of the offending article.
When we left working for other people and were making our own garden we embarked to create a garden that was not only pleasing for ourselves and those who visit but also a harmonious environment for the natural visitors. In this book Dave Goulson, has shown us how there is still so much that we can do, but also how our gardens, no matter how big or small can all play a vital role in providing much needed vital habitat for our much beleaguered native wildlife.
A wonderfully readable book, packed full of ideas of how we can all play our part.
