Eryngium x zabelii
Eryngium x zabelii is a cross between Eryngium alpinum and Eryngium bourgatii. There are now many named forms of Eryngium x zabelii available, however this is an old cross that I obtained from Beth Chatto’s many year ago. It has truly stood the test of time, creating large clumps, even in less then ideal situations.
The large flowers are surrounded by spiky bracts, the flowers and bracts start green, grey then as the summer develops they change to beautiful deep metallic blue shades, enhanced by dark stems. The flowers then dry beautifully to create gorgeous seed heads in the garden throughout winter.
Full sun and good drainage are essential.
