Niwaki Mainichi Snips

Niwaki Mainichi Snips are an excellent choice if you don’t want to spend a fortune but want a good reliable mid range pair of snips. They are very popular in Japan because they are simple, sharp and strong. Unlike western brands, which rely on cushioning and gearing for a smooth feel, these have a more direct action, resulting in a very clean, efficient cut. They feel very comfortable to handle and the chunky catch at the bottom makes them easy to use. I have found this particular model a good robust pair of snips and while it doesn’t have quite the fine narrow pointed blade of some other snips, it is still able to easily navigate some fine deadheading or taking cuttings and is robust enough to tackle slightly woody material with ease.

The yellow handles make them easy to spot when you accidentally put them in the compost.  Perfect for keen gardeners.
When investing in these tools maintenance is key. Clean off sap with Crean mate and Camellia oil, and sharpen with a Niwaki Sharpening Stone every few weeks.
