Actaea simplex ‘Pritchard’s Giant’

I am a great lover of Actaeas in the garden.  Although their flowers do not appear until late summer and early Autumn their foliage, which is heavily divided acts as a wonderful foil throughout the season.  Actaea simplex ‘Prichard’s Giant’ foliage is glossy green and can be used a little like ferns, especially in a cool, shady border.

As the season progresses Actaea simplex ‘Prichard’s Giant’ starts to build in height, once the flowers are fully emerged it can reach up to 2m in height.  The flowers are born in spikes and are creamy white in colour.  Perhaps the piece de resistance with the flowers is the scent, reminiscent of Viburnum carlessii in the spring, it is a sickly sweet fragrance that fills the air at a time of year when you least expect it.

Best in cooler conditions with plenty of moisture.  In full sun the foliage can scorch.
