Hakonechloa macra
Hakonechloa macra forms low growing tussocks of lush vibrant green foliage. It is excellent planted together to form a simple but effective dense green underplanting, as Tom Stuart-Smith did in front of the Wisley glasshouses, underplanting topiary beech columns. We have used it to weave narrow rivers of grasses between herbaceous planting, knitting it all together. It’s a good choice for planting in part shade as well as full sun and keeps to a compact 50-60cm in height.
