Hebe hulkeana
Hebe hulkeana made me completely reconsider my view of this genus. With the common name the New Zealand Lilac, it is at its best in late spring and early summer when large open panicles of lilac flowers are produced. The flowers themselves looking most unlike what you would think of as a Hebe. The handsome foliage is a rich green, edged in maroon red. Evergreen.
I have it growing in pure sand, where it seems to be thriving with the extra drainage. Previous efforts in the garden soil failed. I find it to be completely hardy, however it is the winter wet that has been the problem.
