Pennisetum macrourum
Much admired by visitors to the garden, we find Pennisetum macrourum the most reliable of all the Pennisetum that we grow. Without fail it flowers with profusion from mid summer onwards. The flowers themselves are reminiscent of elongated bottlebrushes, born on long clear stems. We have found over time that the plant can send out the odd runner, we find these easy enough to dig out should you not want them. Height 1.5-2m.
Pennisetum macrourum is completely hardy (it happily survived the ‘beast from the east’), however we recommend that for the first winter after planting that a dry mulch of composted bark is placed around the crown of the plant.
