Santolina pinnata subsp.neopolitana ‘Sulphurea’

Santolina pinnata subsp. neopolitana ‘Sulphurea’ – It is often the norm, that following a period of hot dry weather (such as the Spring that we have just experienced) people start talking about planting drought loving, Mediterranean style plants in the garden – most are destined to failure in our garden, where the Winters are often wet and grey!

One such plant however, which thrives and brings so much to the garden is this Santolina (Cotton Lavender).  Whilst Cotton Lavender normally has mustard yellow flowers (which I am not overly keen on) this selected form has pale lemon yellow flowers, combining beautifully with the grey foliage.  We have it planted on a dry, stony bank, amongst the likes of Allium obliqum, Anthemis ‘Cally Cream’,  Amsonia orientalis and Sporobolus heterolepsis.  Shrubby, trim off old flowers in the Spring .  Hardy to -15C.
